5 Ways to Keep Data Private on Data Privacy Day

As you browse the internet, the websites you visit often use cookies and other tools to collect your personal data. Whether it’s contact details, location information, or other personal insights, your personal data helps companies interact with you better. This has made personal data one of the most valuable global resources.

Since much of our lives are now online, we share personal data daily—often without realizing it. Studies show that over 80% of global smartphone users share personal data like contacts, photos, and browsing history with apps. Yet, only 40% of internet users feel confident in understanding how their data is used by online platforms.

This high demand for personal data highlights the need to ensure it is collected and used responsibly. While organizations rely on data to improve services, mishandling it can compromise your safety and privacy. That’s why clear rules, honest practices, and strong security measures are essential to protect your personal information.

Every year on January 28th, the world observes International Data Privacy Day. Recognized by over 50 countries, this day raises awareness about the importance of protecting personal information and privacy. It’s a time to share best practices and ensure that everyone’s privacy is respected and safeguarded.

So, how does Data Privacy Day affect you? In Rwanda—a growing digital economy—we rely on the internet and online services to enrich our daily lives. There’s no better time to learn simple, effective ways to protect your personal data.

1. Exercise Your Data Rights!

Did you know that Rwanda’s Personal Data Protection and Privacy Law gives you rights over your personal data? You have the right to;
  • Access your personal data to see what information an organization holds about you.
  • Request deletion of your data to safeguard your privacy.
  • Stop the processing of your data if you believe it’s being misused.
  • Edit or correct your data to ensure its accurate.
  • Transfer your data to another organization, giving you control over where it’s stored.
However, there are instances when organizations may still need your data for legal or essential purposes, such as providing critical services. Knowing and exercising these rights empowers you to take control of your personal data.

2. Monitor Your Digital Footprint

Your digital footprint is the trail of information you leave online. Even if you’ve been casual about internet use in the past, it’s never too late to start managing it. Be aware and vigilant over what personal data you are sharing with the online services and platforms you use. Reading privacy policies and terms and conditions for different services can help you to monitor your digital footprint and in turn clean up your online trail.

3. Report Breaches and other cases of personal data misuse to the Data Protection Office

If you suspect your personal data has been misused or compromised, don’t stay silent. Rwanda’s Data Protection Office exists to ensure your personal data rights are safeguarded and organizations that process personal data do so fairly and lawfully. Reporting breaches not only helps protect your data but also strengthens accountability and prevents future incidents.

4. Think twice about oversharing on social media

Social media is great for connecting with others, but sharing too much can make you vulnerable. Avoid posting personal details like your location, travel plans, or financial information. Always ask yourself: Would I be comfortable if this information were public? If not, keep it private.

5. Use Privacy Settings to Your Advantage

Privacy settings are your digital security guard. Take time to explore these features on social media, apps, and devices. Adjust settings to limit who can see your posts, control app permissions, and disable unnecessary tracking. A few clicks can significantly enhance your online safety.
