Rwanda to Host EAC Data Protection meeting on regional data governance

Rwanda is set to host the 3rd East African Community (EAC) Data Protection Knowledge Exchange on October 16th, 2024, in collaboration with the EAC and Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ). The event will take place at the Park Inn by Radisson Hotel in Kigali and aims to establish a harmonized framework for data governance in the digital ecosystem to support the socio-economic development of the region.

Bringing together over 70 representatives from EAC Ministries of ICT, Regulatory Agencies, and Data Protection Authorities, the exchange will focus on designing a regional data governance framework that encourages trade, investment, and facilitates regional integration.

To realize common markets such as the African Free Trade Area, it is essential to create continental and regional frameworks that harmonize data management and facilitate cross-border data flows. Supported by the EAC and development partners, Rwanda and other member states are working collaboratively to synchronize data governance principles while respecting regulatory sovereignty.

This exchange seeks to foster a consolidated regional data environment that enables the free and secure flow of information across East Africa, all while safeguarding personal data security and ensuring equitable access to benefits.

By prioritizing a cohesive framework, this collaborative effort aims to empower EAC member states to fully harness their digital economies. Ultimately, this commitment to working together will enhance regional stability and growth, paving the way for a more integrated and prosperous East African region.
